The Apocalypse professes to be the work of John, who assumes a commanding position over the churches of Asia. History knows only one such character, the Apostle and Evangelist, and to him it is ascribed by the earliest and most trustworthy witnesses, going back to the lifetime of many friends and pupils of the author. This Book was revealed to John, the Apostle of Jesus, in 95 A.D. It is a “closed Book, sealed by seven seals” (Revelation 5,1). This signifies that it is perfectly secret. No man can claim to unravel its message (Revelation 5,3). Only Jesus possesses the key to interpret .

The blessing of the Lord is on all who read, hear, and keep “the words of this prophecy” (Rev ) – which includes us in – and seven times, once to each church (each of which represent conditions to be seen in churches up through the ages), the admonition is given, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto. After the title (Revelation ) and prologue (Revelation ) in which the prophet puts himself into relation with seven churches of Western Asia Minor, he proceeds to describe the vision of Jesus Christ (Revelation f.) which furnished him with his commission to write.[] The immediate outcome of the vision is a series of charges.

As we come to the end of the series of judgments concluding with the seven bowls of God’s fury in Revelat we notice another transition that occurs beginning with Chapter 12 of Revelation. The overall flow of the book of Revelation moves through successive images of Jesus Christ as prophet (Rev. ), priest (Rev. ), and messianic warrior King (Rev. ).
